In this section you will find information about Tannum Sands State High School's curriculum.
Junior Secondary
Curriculum (years 7-9)
Students in year 7 are provided with a
common program that provides for study of English, mathematics, science,
history, languages other than English (Japanese), health and physical education
and the arts. Students have a choice of
technology subjects (Manual Arts or Home Economics) once they have completed a
common Information Technology course.
In years 8 and 9, students study a core
program of English, mathematics, science, history and health and physical
education and is supplemented by an optional program of electives
subjects. Information about the elective

Literacy and numeracy is embedded in all
subjects across the junior secondary curriculum. Additional programs
focusing on cultural, life skills and sport run twice a week.
Senior School
Curriculum (years 10-12)
Year 10
In Year 10,
students are required to study six subjects with mathematics, science, history
and English being compulsory. Opportunities exist for students to choose
elective studies that prepare them for entry into senior phase subjects and
also make links with future career pathways.
Year 10 is
viewed as crucial bridge into years 11 and 12 and is a time when students are
exposed to the rigour and independent learning approaches expected in
Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority year 11 and 12 subjects. A
student’s effort, behaviour and achievement results from year 10 help determine
their year 11 and 12 subject enrolment.
Year 11 and 12
Tannum Sands
State High School offers a great variety of subjects in years 11 and 12. The
curriculum allows students to pursue multiple pathways including a rigorous
academic program, an arts program, a skills based vocational program or a
combination of these.
Students and
parents are required to meet with school staff towards the end of year 10 to discuss
subject choices and learning program options.
Senior students at Tannum Sands State High
School study five subjects. English or English Communication is compulsory and
all students must also study at least one mathematics subject. All other
subjects are offered for students to select via subject lines and should relate
to interest areas and future career pathways.
All
students must enrol in a program of study that enables them the opportunity to
meet their QCE requirements.
Senior
students have a range of flexible learning options, these include:
- Education
Queensland Industry Partnership (EQIP) programs
- TAFE and other Registered
Training Organisation (RTO) courses
- University courses
- Brisbane School of Distance
Education
- School based traineeship or
work placement
The school
timetable allows senior students flexible arrangements. If senior students access any of the above
flexible learning options they may be given a flex in their timetable. During
this flex students are expected to attend a supervised study session or with
parental permission, not be at school during these times.
